It’s so fun being a podcast host because I get to meet some pretty neat people doing some amazing things. And this week’s guest, Megan Kitt, is no different!
Listen in as we chat about how Megan’s writing career took a drastic turn that led to what she does now – running a company called Tuli, which fights poverty in East Africa by creating sustainable jobs there.
Here’s a little something Megan shared with me, before we even recorded her podcast episode:
I was in Uganda on a writing assignment in 2014 when I started the company, and since then, it’s grown into my full time job and has empowered the artisans we work with to feed their families, educate their children, and rise out of poverty.
I don’t know about you, but I’d say that’s pretty darn awesome and I think she’s literally changing the world one person at a time!
Our conversation also went in the direction of modeling, the fashion industry and why Megan knows firsthand how the industry sends negative messages to girls and women out there. You may think that this doesn’t have anything to do with the rest of our conversation, but it ties into it perfectly because Tuli is a fashion brand and Megan is using it to fight against the norms in the industry by using women of all sorts of looks, most of whom are not professional models, and not using Photoshop to change their appearances! But as we all know… change is slow!

Megan Kitt is the founder of Tuli, a fashion brand that fights poverty by creating sustainable jobs in East Africa by selling handmade, fair trade jewelry. Tuli has empowered artisans to feed their families, educate their children, and rise out of poverty.
Megan got her start in journalism, and her work took her across the United States, into Asia, and finally, to Africa where she met Tuli’s first artisans outside of Kampala and worked with them to develop a small line of products that would become Tuli. The company has since expanded into Nairobi as well.
Megan was uniquely poised to launch a fashion brand: She got her start modeling as a teenager to save money for college. Through her work as a model, Megan learned enough about the fashion industry to catapult Tuli to success, all while fighting some of the darker sides of the fashion industry.
