For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a bit on the competitive side. Heck as a kid/middle schooler there were times when I was told “you’re too competitive.” Being competitive can be a bad thing, but if done right I think it’s a good thing. And well, here’s my chance to unleash a bit of that “beast” again. Nothing like saying it can be good and then using the word beast, right? 😉

You see, my coach Kelly runs a challenge each September. This year is the 10th anniversary! I’ve participated in almost all of the challenges except maybe 3 or 4 of them. Back in the early stages,  I always joined raring to go and excited for the month and what would be achieved…  only to have one excuse after another as to why I wasn’t a challenge finisher.

But the most common one? I ended up sick… a lot! And sure that was an excuse but did you also know there’s such a thing as upper limiting where when you’re trying to level up/move to the next level in biz/life you self-sabotage yourself (and I’m not saying I made myself sick but getting sick when upper leveling is a common thing – even Marie Forleo talks about!) It’s originally talked about in the book The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks which I highly recommend by the way!

But the last few years  so many things have changed in my life and I’ve come to the challenges with an open mind, willingness, and desire to be a finisher and take things to the next level. So I have.  Of course there may have been some “bribery” of brownies from Send Out Cards – these suckers are divine – that also enticed me to be more all in 😉

Why Stretch?

Someone asked me ‘why would you participate in something that pushes you to step out of your comfort zone?’

Oh boy there are sooo many reasons! But the main one – comfort zones are BORING! Seriously, I spent so long of my life and biz life living in comfort zones that I felt stale, bored, and constantly wondering ‘isn’t there more’, ‘what if’… and I knew I had to leave the comfort zones to find out!

And then there’s a few other reasons:

  • Kelly’s safe, judgement free, space
  • Community – this kinda fits into the above one; the community Kelly has built is so powerful and full of amazing peeps. And the energy from the participants is awesome.
  • Lots of challenges to choose from
  • Being able to create your own challenge, if you don’t choose one of the ones in the guide
  • Finisher gifts (mmmm brownies!)
  • Connections – this kinda fits into community too but oh well; the connections you’ll make with other participants is great & I have seen JV partnerships, etc. come out of challenges before.

And this year, in honor of the 10th anniversary, my favorite reason to be in the challenge is TEAMS! We have Team Bold, being led by my friend Val & then Team Shine being led by none other than moi. There’s been some competitive, fun natured, kind hearted smack talk. Let’s just say Val & I are both competitive and we each have some competitive peeps on our teams.  The month is sure to be full of shenanigans and tons more fun!

So, Why Am I Stretching?

I’ve been wanting to take my content marketing to the next level for a while, but I keep letting other things get in my way and pushing my passion and what I want more of in the world to the back burner. But being all in (and a team leader) for the challenge, gives me the ‘excuse’ to focus on my biz (how sad I need an “excuse” to make the time…that’s something that needs to be changed!)

It also gives me the inspiration and motivation to not keep doing the same things I’m comfortable with and step it up and do something that makes me uncomfortable but will pay off in the long run.

And when there’s group accountability and team accountability, it makes me wanna stretch and do more because all those other peeps are watching me, rooting me on, and that motivates me!

Your Turn! Isn’t It Time To Stretch Yourself Too?

And now, here’s YOUR sign ;-)… if you’re ready to step up your content marketing game, this is YOUR sign (aka invitation) to do it! Sign up and join the Stretch Yourself Challenge!

Isn’t it time to stretch yourself???

Oh and if you’re wondering – yes, stepping out of your comfort zone is scary but it’s been the most amazing thing for me. I am living the wildest (in a good way), most adventurous, awesome life ever because of taking chances and leaving my comfort zone(s)! 🙂

  1. Tishia, I remember you getting sick during Stretch Yourself Challenge in the past!! Fortify yourself right now with Vitamin C, echinacea, and chicken soup and wash your hands repeatedly. You don’t want to dull your ‘shine’, now do you?! 🤩

This is the year for you to be a FINISHER! I know it in my bones.

Loved your blog post. Go BOLDLY forward now!! 😉

    1. Interestingly, I woke up yesterday with a bit of a head cold. Been keeping it at bay with some vitamin C, early to bed (so unusual for me lol) and resting if I need to. Feel better today but still definitely fighting something. Not gonna let sickness overtake me again. I’m ready to uplevel 🙂

  2. Oh my goodness! I have always been ultra-competitive too, but at the same time, I’m very much an introvert. So I do really well at competitions where I can do my thing and not be TOO public about it. Of course I’ve done some very public things too, but that’s another story. So glad to be on your Team Shine. You’re doing such a great job!

    1. I get the not too public about it thing, I am like that sometimes too. But lately not so much lol Love having you on Team Shine 🙂

  3. You’ve totally got the right mindset! Comfort zones are ridiculously boring and there is no point in playing small when we only have this ONE life to live 🙂 I adore watching how much you’ve stretched and changed over the last couple years! You are inspiring to watch and there is no limit to how far you can go – So glad to be on Team Shine with you! 🙂

    1. Thanks Kristin! Thrilled to have you on Team Shine 🙂 And that whole one life to live thing has been weighing on my heart lately – there’s still so much I want to do but I’m being a little lax on pushing myself to get out there. Time to get moving again 😉

  4. Thank you for saying so many kind things about the challenge and our community. I LOVE what the Stretch Yourself Challenge creates for all of us and you know we continue it in Momentum Coaching Mastermind all through the year – I look forward to watching ALL of your stretches Tish!

  5. I’ve always felt like we’ve had a lot in common. I’m proud to be on your team. And I’m even prouder that I have Val playing on our side just a little. Bwahahaha!

We got this! Hell yes! Gonna SHINE!

    1. Hey there Shannon. Yes, we do have a lot in common! I’m thrilled to have you on my team but more than that, I love all the action I’ve seen you taking 🙂 (And thanks for having Val from that OTHER team helping us 😉 lol)

  6. Great post and love that you shared all the other reasons for being in the challenge. Your first two reasons are my favorite — judgment free zone and community. I’m learning to feel safe and that’s helping me grow. Congratulations on being a leader for Team Shine and to a success challenge month ahead and beyond!

  7. The brownies really do send one over the edge for a challenge. lol I agree about all the benefits of participating in challenges (or anything with Kelly in the lead) because of the judgment-free zone and true encouragement to be your best self — whatever that is.

    1. Hey Stephanie! Great to see your comment here. Thanks for stopping by 🙂 Oh yes, THOSE brownies are the devil but in a case like this, when they push me to finish…I think they’re a good devil LOL

  8. It is so crazy how things come up when you make up your mind to do something. It happens to me all the time and I had to make up my mind to do it anyway! I’m so excited we are stretching together this year!

  9. Tish, I love your authenticity and honesty. The question I often ask myself when I procrastinate is ” How would I feel if I did not attempt this? ” and that usually gets me off my butt and back into action!

  10. When I’m _really_ feeling I’m holding back and in need of some great support, encouragement, and challenging, Kelly’s group is one of two I rely on most. I love that you’re not only one of the team leaders … but my team leader. And, Val’s a great gal, too. Seems an itsy-bitsy guilty hiring her tech skills to help me with one of my challenges. But, hey, … there’s those brownies and other goodies waiting at the finish line for us. 🙂

    1. LOL yeah, what are you doing hiring someone from that other team to help you??? 😉 Kidding of course! Thrilled that Val can help 🙂

  11. Hey – love that hell yes button 🙂 I think this is my second challenge – but I don’t remember why I didn’t finish last time. This time I am DETERMINED tho 🙂 Good luck this month – keep shinin’ on ☀️

  12. This post just radiates the Tishia Lee energy! I can’t imagine the super, shiny, animated Tishia ever being BORING! 😄 So I guess that means over these years I’ve known you that no matter the excuses, limits, or illnesses – you HAVE stretched! I hope this year is your best stretch yet and takes this part of your business to BOLDER new levels. 😉

    1. Hey hey hey Jennifer! So nice to have you here leaving a comment. Oh trust me, I used to be BORING. Well maybe boring isn’t the right word lol.

  13. Hey, Tish
Thank you for sharing your experience. I can relate so much in self-sabotage and getting physically sick when pressure increases.
It’s a good step to know it and another amazing step to act on it.
    Go #teamshine!!

    1. Hi there Sabrina. Thanks for your comment. That whole getting sick when upleveling thing has me so fascinated, ever since I first heard about it a few years ago.

  14. OMG, Tish…I didn’t know that getting sick when up-leveling is a common thing. I just thought there was something wrong with *me*! Thank you for this awesome post, and I look forward to seeing what you create now that you’re unleashing the beast!

  15. So true that even though a challenge may be hard…having a safe environment to share with helps make it a bit easier, and yet still reaching beyond what is comfortable. You have such a great and loving spirit. AND…it does stretching ourselves does make us BOLDER. 🙂

    1. Hi Lynn. So thrilled to have you stop by and leave a comment. The safe environment makes things easier…well, maybe not easier but it sure helps to push through comfort zones and stretch ourselves when we have a safe community to cheer us on, etc.

  16. Oh, there is so much goodness in this post! What a great point about getting sick when you were about to uplevel. Ego is a tricky little SOB, isn’t it? I’m working to take note of my own self-sabotaging. And I love your humor! Girl, you ARE a beast. Own it! 🙂

    1. Hi Karin. Oh man ego sure is a tricky little SOB! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment on my little piece of virtual real estate 🙂

  17. The never ending dance between should I or shouldn’t I, right? You’ve been at this a LONG time and nice to see that you haven’t thrown in the towel. Sorry to hear that you’ve been plagued with sickness however.

Yes, comfort zones ARE boring and that’s probably the biggest motivator for me. I get bored easily and having a challenge is where it’s at for me! Love all of the great reasons you shared as to why this challenge is the perfect one to join.

Here’s to finishing with a BIG WIN for #TeamShine! 🙂

    1. Hi Julie! Thanks for swinging by and leaving a comment 🙂 If there’s one thing, you could say I’m persistent at this stuff lol. Glad you’re enjoying the challenge. Woot, #TeamShine!

  18. Tishia you always have such pleasant ways of expressing your thoughts. I was new to the community last year and remember that you were sad about not being able to finish. As the leader of that other team – TeamShine, I know your going to kick booty on this one.
See you at the finish line – Behind #TeamBold

    1. lol oh Kim, I love your ‘other team’ and ‘see you at the finish line – Behind #TeamBold’ comment. Made me laugh out loud, literally.

    1. Carol, look it up – it’s intriguing to read about. When I first heard about it, I was like WHAT? And then it started happening every single time I was trying to up my game and move forward…then it got really interesting and I was like, wow, this makes so much sense!

  19. Hi Team Leader, I hear you about wanting to be a finisher but how sometimes things just get in the way. Last year was my first challenge and I was a finisher. This year I am adding more effort into the bonus challenges so I can be an even better finisher. I just need to nail down that one thing I want to do most – and I agree with you I couldn’t have found a better Challenge leader and community that while some are really competitive and some aren’t we still all want to see each other succeed. Thanks for the encouragement. Self sabotage has been one of my big problems in the past. So I heard what you were saying. All the best as you put your all into this years challenge.

    1. Hi Evelyn. Thanks for stopping by and thrilled to have you on Team Shine. Self-sabatoge is such a nasty little evil thing, isn’t it?!

  20. So excited to be on TEAM SHINE!!!! You are a super leader and I love that you are competitive, because that’s not my style and I need to little nudge to be that way. Take care of yourself and get whatever rest/food/sunSHINE you need to stay strong – put that oxygen mask on yourself before your team!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Renee. So thrilled to have you on team shine! And I always love (but never remember it in the moment) the put your oxygen mask on first, referral… it’s so true!

  21. I love the sentence you mention in this article “comfort zone is BORING !” It makes me laugh! ya ! If we need something fun, Step out the comfort zone!
